Hugh David Black

HUGH DAVID BLACK
Lieutenant Commander

 

I pass the street that bears Hugh D. Black’s name which runs into Oradell Avenue in Oradell for years now. I put a roof on a house only a few blocks away and not until now did I find out about Hugh David Black.

He graduated from Hackensack High School in the early 1920’s and went on to have a stellar career in the United States Navy until on February 28, 1942, only shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, and our
declaration of war against Japan and then Germany. The ship Hugh D. Black commanded was sunk off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey.

In May of 1943, they named a ship in his honor USS BLACK (DD-666), 1943-1971.
Hugh David Black’s name is listed on the
Original Wall Unit at Hackensack High School Row 7 down 32.

Let us never forget his sacrifice.
